Diary 20.04.08

Dear All,

Sorry for the long wait for the diary, it has been a pretty busy few months for me.  At last I’ve had some time to collect my thoughts and feel ready to share again.

Before I get into what I’ve been up to I feel I need to make a statement regarding an article that appeared about me recently.  As some of you will have seen, the Daily Mail published an interview with me back in February which was supposed to be publicity about Zorro which was opening around that time.  I would like to say for the record that what was published was pretty much all made up.  I could tell from when I was interviewed that the journalist had her own agenda as far as what she wanted the interview to be about, but despite my attempts to steer the subject back to Zorro she insisted on focusing on my past career.  I would like to distance myself fully from the article and insist that the views presented in it do not represent my own views and I found the whole thing incredibly distasteful.  As soon as I read the article I contacted my agent to vent my anger at how I had been represented, which indeed has been passed on to the newspaper and I would like to apologise to anyone it may have offended.  Unfortunately one is not allowed to check these articles over before they are published to check for inaccuracies but I can only assure you all that I will never do an interview for that newspaper again.  I hope that people who know me will realise how unlike me the article sounded and I can only hope that those that don’t will give me the benefit of the doubt.  I have had a couple of concerned e mails to me through the website that I have personally replied to and I hope that this statement can now put this matter to rest.

Back to happier things;

I have spent the last three and a half months being a part of the beginning of a very exciting show.  I was extremely lucky to be cast as Ramon in Zorro the musical and I’ve had a great time doing it on tour, although some of it was a bit harrowing but more of that later.  We started rehearsing at Alford House in London (nicknamed awful house for obvious reasons) at the beginning of January and from the beginning it was clear to me that I was a part of something unique.  The cast had been made up of a mixture of English and Spanish singers, actors and dancers (along with one amazing American) and a great and exciting creative team.  As the six weeks of rehearsals progressed it became clearer that we were embarking on something that had the potential to not only be fantastic but groundbreaking also.  I was relishing playing the bad guy again, some of you will know that when I was at the Royal Ballet I was often cast as the baddie and of course the Black Swan and Valmont are not exactly characters you’d want your parents to meet!  One of the biggest challenges for me was changing my voice into the low gravelly sound that the director wanted.  It went through a few phases of nearly losing it but eventually it settled into something comfortable, although I was constantly getting comments from audience members worried for me.  I won’t bore you with too many details of the tour but a few things happened.  The most memorable was in Glasgow when we had to cancel the first two shows, due to technical problems.  The magnificent set for Zorro (brilliantly designed by Tom Piper) was obviously designed to sit in a theatre and not tour.  In each venue it would take from the load-in on Sunday night until Wednesday for us to be ready to do the show.  However in Glasgow we had been scheduled to do our first show on Tuesday and it was the only venue where the stage was raked (not flat but on a slight angle).  Well the first show went up one hour late having had no time to run through the scene changes and subsequently stopped 20 minutes later when our stage manager had been trampled by a piece of set.  Luckily he was not badly hurt and we cancelled the matinee on the following day to allow us to run through the scene changes properly before finally doing a full show on Wednesday night.  We were all deeply upset about the situation we had been put in and thankfully the Tuesday night show the following week in Manchester was cancelled so the same thing didn’t happen again.  One other memory I will take from the tour was an evening out that many of the company went on to celebrate the upcoming wedding of Lesli Margherita (our American member).  Lesli was getting married back home in the states on the final Saturday of the tour and since she had been in UK for three months had missed out on a hen night, or bachelorette party as it’s known over there.  We organised a night out at a drag club in Manchester called The Birdcage and we had a fantastic time.  Lesli was dressed in veil and garter and we had a fun evening watching the great drag shows and dancing ourselves silly (some even on a pole)! The tour finished last Saturday and we had a great final week in Milton Keynes and a good send off at our last show.

At present Zorro is waiting for a transfer into the West End, however I won’t be staying with the show anymore.  I received a phone call a couple of days ago informing me that major rewrites were occurring and a big part of that was the reduction of my part.  My first act song, Senor, was cut and my solo at the start of Act 2 was cut, leaving me with far less than I originally had.  It seemed impossible for me to continue doing a part that has been stripped of so much.  I am very sad about this situation but it is beyond my control and I wish all involved with the show success in the future.  I shall miss the company terribly.

Now, the most exciting news EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My gorgeous and talented wife Sarah and I are expecting a baby Coops in August.  Needless to say we are absolutely over the moon and incredibly excited and Sarah is enjoying her pregnancy very much so far.

More work news to come very soon.

Thank you all for your continued support and I hope to see you at a theatre soon!

Love Adam x
