| Hello, everyone, I hope you are well. I’m coming to the end of my time at Guys & Dolls. I’m now officially leaving on October 14th, having extended I think about three times now, but it’s been great, this whole experience has been wonderful. I’ve had such a good time, the company have been brilliant to work with and it’ll be sad to leave them but, you know, in this business we all have to move on and each new job brings something exciting to look forward to and it’ll be nice to move on to something else. As most of you will know, it started off with Kelly Price and I playing Sky and Sarah, we started opposite Neil Morrisey and Sally Ann Triplett, playing Nathan and Adelaide, who were great and we had a wonderful time with them. They stayed for the first four months and then we had Claire Sweeney and Patrick Swayze coming in. Claire has now left us to go off on the UK tour of Guys & Dolls and we have Lynsey Britton back in with us, who was the cover for Adelaide before, and Patrick is still here. It was obviously very exciting to be performing with a great Hollywood star such as Patrick, especially as he comes from a similar background to me. We both started out as dancers in ballet companies and then have moved into other areas and it’s sort of ironic that neither of us dances particularly in this production but nevertheless it’s been a pleasure to work with him. He’s an amazing actor and I’ve really enjoyed my scenes with him and he’s fun to be around so he’s been great. Anybody who’s been to see the show since he’s been here will know that it’s been a bit crazy around the stage door, somewhat similar to performances in Japan that I’ve been in. The stagedoor is packed after every show with a good few people outside, mostly waiting to see Patrick. I get stopped as well occasionally, which is very nice but you know, one can’t compete with a Hollywood star, but that’s good! It’s been great, it’s given the show a nice lift and Patrick’s now staying on until the end of November with the show which is good for the rest of the company because hopefully they’ll keep getting in the audiences. Kelly, Lynsey and I will be leaving so they’ll have three new principals joining Patrick, and I’m hoping to have a holiday! It’ll be nice to get away and spend some quality time with Sarah. It’s been a while since we’ve been away together on holiday so it’ll be good to have that chance to get a bit of a normal life. I’ve been on this job now for eight months, which is by far the longest I’ve ever done anything in one stretch before. I think the longest thing I’d previously done in one stretch was Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella at this same theatre, the Piccadilly Theatre way back in ’98, I think it was, ‘98/’99, so that’s been great. It’s very different doing a long run of something when you’ve come from the background of a ballet company where the repertoire is always changing. It’s definitely a challenge, mentally more than physically, for me to keep the performance fresh and to treat each show like it’s the first time you’ve been in that situation, and it’s been tough in places but on the whole I’ve loved every minute of it. I think because this show is such a well written show, the script is brilliant and the songs are fantastic to sing so I think that always helps and again, the company are amazing so that helps as well, but I think the production values that Michael Grandage puts in to all his work have been fantastic for me to be a part of, so I’m very grateful to all concerned for letting me have this opportunity. So, to the future: well, who knows? I wish I had some news to tell everyone, especially regarding Liaisons which seems to be a never-ending saga, but I haven’t unfortunately, so I’m now in the rather unenviable position of being out of work, which is the down-side of being in this profession. As a self-employed artiste you can’t be in work all the time but it’s something that we get used to and you just hope that the not-working gaps aren’t very long, so let’s hope that it’s not too long before I have something else to go into. Obviously, I always have projects that I’m working on myself and plenty of irons in the fire but those are normally long-term projects so those are things that take a while to get together and take planning and it’s always the immediate future that one worries about, but as I say, I’m sure things will turn up. I suppose I’m quite lucky in the fact that I have different areas that I work in: musical theatre, straight dancing, choreography, acting, so hopefully I’ll get something in one of those areas, but who knows? It’s a bit scary, but you just have to trust in yourself and in your talent and in your agent, and I have the most brilliant agent in the world, Jean Diamond, and she will have me working no doubt very, very soon! Hopefully she’ll let me go on holiday for a couple of weeks but knowing Jean she’ll make sure I take mobile and email with me so she can get in touch with me (only joking!). I’m just trying to think if there’s anything else very interesting to share. No, I suppose the only thing is it would be nice to have some time off so that I can go and see some other shows, actually. There are a lot of musicals just opening and I know people in most of the new ones: Wicked, Spamalot, Cabaret, Sound of Music, so there’s lots of things to see, which will be good. That’s about it, really, I can’t think of anything else to say! So hopefully I’ll have some more news about Liaisons and the forthcoming tour of that very soon, but thank you all for your continuing support. Please, please buy next year’s Calendar which has now just gone on sale. It has some fantastic pictures of Liaisons in it so hopefully you’ll go and buy that because it’s really great. Hope to see you all soon at some other theatre somewhere when you come to see me. Alright, take care all, Adam x
